Overview

October 7th to 12th 2025

Grade 4

With our cycling tour of Andalucía, discover one of the most beautiful corners of the province of Málaga, the Axarquía region of Andalucía guided by Port Velo, stretching from the eastern side of Málaga to the beautiful town of Nerja.

Normally showcased by La Vuelta a España every August, Andalucía has to be one of the best places to ride a bike.

You’ll experience one of the best climates in Europe, along with clear well surfaced roads, fabulous coastal and mountain routes and varied scenery and of course lots of beautiful climbs to ride.

On this cycling holiday we explore the province of Málaga, home to several National Parks. Starting in Málaga, where we spend 1 night before taking in Antequera, Granada and the surrounding landscapes, then descending towards Almuñécar and staying in Nerja before finally arriving in Málaga, for our final night.

With an abundance of flights from Europe and beyond, a favourable climate, nice hotels and mouth-watering Andalucía cuisine, what are you waiting for?

Assisted by fantastic guides and a support vehicle, you can ride at your own pace to get the most out of each day. It is an ideal holiday for mixed ability groups. This week is very much a 'holiday' and riding through the ancient landscape, enjoying the far reaching and dramatic views will leave you feeling enlivened and with a sense of achievement with lasting memories.

Arrival / Departure Transfers

We are offering transfers to and from Malaga airport to your hotel, which provide flight options from several UK airports. The following itinerary is based on the EasyJet flight from Bristol, and the return flight on the Sunday. There are alternatives provided by Ryanair and Jet2.

Our transfer coach will aim to leave no later than 11:45am for the journey to the hotel, so your flight will need to arrive at least 1 hour before then.

Please Note: For anyone travelling with their bike, depending on the numbers, there may be an extra charge if we need a vehicle with a trailer.

Bike Hire

Alternatively for those not wanting to take their own bike, there are bikes available to hire for your holiday. Please see our Bike Hire page for details like prices as well as full specs and dimensions. Please note that we cannot guarantee that there will be a bike in your size available. If you would like to hire a bike, please check availability before booking your holiday.

Accommodation

Your accommodation is provided in 4* hotels at each of our destinations. The holiday is priced, based on a twin occupancy of a double room. However should you wish to opt for a double room to yourself, this is available at the time of booking and priced accordingly.

Meals

Breakfast will be included at the hotel and lunch will be provided along the routes each day, in local cafes and tavernas. We have also included dinner on two of the nights, at the hotels, these are highlighted in the itinerary. It is usual to eat communally although of course you are free to opt out if you wish.

Itinerary

With Port Velo Cycling Road Tours, you will explore the picturesque scenery of the incredibly romantic region of Andalucía on deserted roads, gliding through never-ending olive and orange groves. You will of course encounter challenging climbs but also enjoy spectacular descents along winding roads which will make you smile time and again. As your cycling host during your Andalucía cycling holiday we will take you to discover hidden villages in the hills, where the true essence of Andalucía is still very much alive.

The mountain passes are still relatively unknown, although they have been part of La Vuelta a España in many editions. They are just as challenging and even more scenic than the most famous European climbs. In recent times, Málaga has been acknowledged as a great alternative to the most typical cycling destinations in Spain. Its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, picturesque inland Andalucían villages and good tarmac quality, make it a perfect place for all cyclists who want to escape overcrowded cycling destinations.

The route of this tour is flexible and should be seen as a guide only. Local conditions, weather or fitness could lead to changes in our daily plans. All times and distances are approximate.

Arrival Day

After arriving into Málaga and our transfer, you will be given time to settle into your rooms and assemble your bike and setup ready for a casual warm up ride.

Malaga

The ride planned for the afternoon is a short ride to the town of Almogia, which in free translation from Moorish means "the nice one”. You will appreciate that description when you look at it from the mirador.

As we leave the vibrant city of Málaga, traffic thins as we head towards the area of Almogía.

Almogia

Almogia is just half way on our loop. It is set upon a ridged slope, and from the main avenue dozens of streets articulate as in a labyrinth, with whitewashed houses all around and rugged pave because of the steep slope. The best place to have a coffee is Plaza de la Constitución, right in front of the Town Hall.

Energy-filled, we exit Almogia, you can find on the left side of the road a water font to fill up the bottles, while a little bit further is the beautiful lookout which is the best place to take a picture of this beautiful town.

Returning we follow the road in the direction of Málaga, letting us enjoy beautiful views of the Casasola reservoir.

Casaola Reservoir

It’s then time to head back for dinner and an evening briefing for the riders and leaders to get together and discuss the preparations for the week ahead.

Day 2

Málaga to Antequera

Breakfast: 8-8:30am

Briefing: 9:15

Depart for road ride: 9:30

Distance: 60km

Climbing Total: 1600m

Lunch: Almogia

Dinner: 7:30pm

After a lovely hearty breakfast we head up to the historical town of Antequera, a picturesque whitewash town with ancient cobbled streets and a striking Moorish fortress. We have already taken this route the day before to Almogia, after which we will follow rolling roads until we reach a steady climb to Villanueva de la Concepcion.

Rider on a bridge near Villanueva de la Concepcion

Here we will stop for coffee and tapas or a perfuto before finishing the day in Antequera. Dinner is included in your stay here before Day 3, the Queens Stage.

Day 3

Antequera to Granada

Breakfast: 8-8:30am

Briefing: 9:15

Depart for road ride: 9:30

Distance: 139km

Climbing Total: 1550m

Lunch: Loja

Dinner: 7:30pm

The start of todays ride is fairly flat and is the perfect opportunity to warm the legs before the first climb up to the 800m town of Archidona. As we weave around the busier towns and villages we head towards Loja situated in a narrow valley dominated by the barren limestone massif of the Sierra de Loja, this small town - divided in two by the Genil river - with its undulating countryside of olive groves and cereal fields is where lunch awaits.

After lunch as we pass through vineyards and olive groves, not to mention stunning mountain views, we will be climbing again out of the valley as we leave the small town of Villa Mesia, topping out to see views of our destination and a welcome rest in Granada.

Day 4

Granada to Nerja

Breakfast: 8-8:30am

Time to Explore Granada

Briefing: 13:15

Depart for road ride: 13:30

Distance: 92km

Climbing Total: 950m

Lunch: Granada

Dinner: 7:30pm

After breakfast you will have some time to explore the city of Granada. It's known for grand examples of medieval architecture dating to the Moorish occupation, especially the Alhambra.

Alhambra Hill Top Fortress

This sprawling hilltop fortress complex encompasses royal palaces, serene patios, and reflecting pools from the Nasrid dynasty, as well as the fountains and orchards of the Generalife gardens.

The views here are simply spectacular, and you'll be surrounded by unspoilt landscape for miles!

We will then depart for a spectacular ride down to Nerja via Almuñécar on the coast of the Mediterranean.

As we descend we head into Mirador de le Cabra where we stop at the roadside restaurant known as “Refugio de piedra” or Mesón los Prados. Both are good places to have a coffee, fill up the water bottles and stretch our legs before the descent to the coast begins.

From here, the road takes you to possibly the most beautiful area of the whole tour. “The Goat’s path”, this is the old road that used to connect the coast with Granada city. After the highway was built, it was left in disuse and nowadays it’s a cycling paradise. You will be amazed by its breathtaking views of the Sierra de Tejeda with an impressive ravine behind the old crash-barriers.

A dizzying and fun descent marks the way to Otivar, onto Jete before the coastline greets us at Almuñecar . Depending on the time we arrive to Almuñecar, you can decide whether you want to stop there for refreshments or continue to Nerja along the old but well paved N-340. A road surrounded by a beautiful landscape of cliffs, rugged hills and crystal waters underneath.

It is here in Nerja where you will enjoy an evening meal and enjoy stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea at your luxury hotel perched on a cliffside. Indulge in their pool, sun terrace, and dinner, before a stroll to the old town of Nerja and a visit to the famous Balcón de Europa. It’s a beautiful viewpoint located in the heart of the town, over a cliff, with great views of the sea and the eastern beaches of Nerja and in our opinion is a must see.

Balcon de Europa

Day 5

Nerja to Málaga

Breakfast: 8-8:30am

Briefing: 9:15

Depart for road ride: 9:30

Distance: 60km

Climbing Total: 397m

Lunch: TBC

Dinner: 7:30pm

Today we depart Nerja to head back along the beautiful coastal road to Málaga. The option here is to depart later in the day after you have had time to rest and indulge in some more of the luxury afforded to you in the hotel or stroll around the old town. The choice is yours as todays ride is about taking your time and taking it easy after the past week. Alternatively there are several extended routes and options open to you.

It is now time to return to where our discovery of the beautiful corner of the province of Málaga started, with a mindful of wonderful memories and legs that have earned a rest.
